Writing Informational Text:
In the past students have focused on narrative writing mainly about their opinions, beliefs, and personal experiences.
To be college ready students must be:
  • aware of what the assignment is, why they are doing it, and who it is for.
  • choose words, information, structure, and format carefully.
  • produce complex writing projects by integrating narrative strategies with argumentative, or expository with narrative.
  • use technology when creating, editing, and collaborating.
  • able to cite sources in a clear and accurate manner.
  • able to produce high quality first draft text under a tight deadline as well as improve other writings with multiple drafts when time allows.
  • know and incorporate the steps of the writing process.
  • type a minimum of three pages within one sitting.
Writing Standards for Informational Text:
Text Types and Purposes:
Student must be able to:
  • write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic, convey thoughts, concepts, and information through the organization and analysis of their product.
  • use strategies such as definition, classification, compare/contrast, cause/effect; include formatting: such as headings, graphics, charts, tables, and multimedia to aid comprehension.
  • include relevant facts, definitions, quotations, other useful information, and examples to support.
  • use transitions.
  • include precise language and domain-specific vocab.
  • write in a formal style.
  • include a closing statement/section.
  • write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences/events including details and appropriate sequencing.
  • engage the reader by introducing the characters while the story unfolds naturally and logically.
  • include dialogue to enhance characters and story.
Production and Distribution of Writing:
Student must be able to:
  • produce a clear writing project that displays development, organization, and style appropriate for the task, purpose, and audience.
  • use teacher and peer suggestions to enhance writing project.
  • use the Internet to assist with research, production, and sharing of final project.
Research to Build and Present Knowledge:
Student must be able to:
  • conduct research through several sources while seeking inquiry.
  • gather relevant information from multiply print and digital sources, assess the credibility of the source, quote/paraphrase and cite the data of others .
  • include information from resources as evidence to support their analysis, reflection, and research.

Student must be able to:
  • Write regularly for extended or short amount of times for specific task, purpose, and audience.
